| The year is 1969. February 1969 to be more precise. Eight musicians gather in New York City to work together on an album that will open a new era in contemporary music. Led by no one else than Miles Davis were Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter, Dave Holland, Joe Zawinul, John McLaughlin and Tony Williams. They recorded "In a Silent Way", and starting there, have gone their separate ways to make history by leaving their mark on a new musical style called jazz-rock. It may have been the "Birth of Cool", but there was also the birth of fusion. We had jazz-rock (or fusion, as some may call it) ever since. While the genre had an immense audience in the '70s and early '80s, it became less popular in the decades to follow. Its flame is still carried today by musicians like Pat Metheny, Scott Henderson and Allan Holdsworth. Jazz musicians like to be creative, they like to improvise, they like to get influenced from all the other musical styles, be it rock, funk, R&B or ethno-world. Creating music at the edge, sometimes crossing over, now that is a challenge jazz musicians like to take. We have been lucky to be graced by so many pieces of music that were released in the last 40 years. Some albums are reviewed here, at least the most important ones. As the collection of reviews hosted will grow in time, we hope that this site will become the ultimate shrine for jazz-rock and fusion aficionados. There are not many resources specifically dedicated to this style, so we got encouraged to create and maintain this portal for your reference and enjoyment. This site is entirely dedicated to jazz-rock and fusion fans. Are you one of us? Then you have come to the right place. If not, we want you to discover this style by reading what others think about some of the masterpieces of this genre. Eddie L. Welcome to the Jazz-Rock and Fusion Network! |
